National Status in 4 countries (France, Germany, UK and USA)IMEMG supports the emergence of joint European requirements based on minimum European standards produced from national standards.France StatusReference: MoD and DGA Instruction n°211893/DEF/DGA/INSP/IPEThe French position on IM is based on both the manufacturers and the Ministry of Defence demand for safer munitions that preserves performances and affordability. Concrete operational benefits of IM for personnel, equipments and combat platforms have now been clearly demonstrated. French industry also takes advantage of IM when using insensitive energetic materials at the warheads and rocket motors facilities. Safety distances can be reduced. Storage space can be increased. Manufacturing and storage buildings cost decrease. To acknowledge these incontestable assets of IM, the new French instruction issued in July 2011 goes a step further when compared to previous one dated 1993. Henceforth, Stanag 4439 shall be a mandatory requirement for every purchase of conventional munitions. This encompasses every item containing energetic material except nuclear weapons. Each waiver must be approved by Chief of Staff. In addition, a comprehensive assessment of IM signature of in-service munitions must be conducted. This will help to understand the level of safety of the inventory and then authorities will decide which munitions should be phased out for non-compliance with IM requirements.
